What Do You Think of Popular Things?

Form 7.


Цели:

способствовать формированию информационной компетенции обобщение знаний учащихся о некоторых фактах культуры Британии, России, Хабаровского края; знакомство с разными точками зрения британских подростков на причины популярности различных предметов, событий;

развитие коммуникативной компетенции – развитие способностей учащихся к логическому изложению содержания, к формулированию выводов из услышанного и прочитанного, развитие способности к оценке чужого мнения и выражение собственного, развитие способности к репродуктивным и продуктивным речевым действиям, совершенствование речевых навыков.

развитие компетентности разрешения проблем - формирование способности к критическому мышлению и оценке собственной деятельности.


Оборудование: основа для ассоциограммы, иллюстрированные пословицы, плакат “Link List: Britain/Russia/Far East (Popular Places/Brand Name Goods), коробка для игры “A Cat in a Sack”, рекламные проспекты популярных российских и дальневосточных товаров, туристические буклеты (Британия), матрёшки, самовар, набор посуды «Хохлома», сушки, сок «Тонус», минеральная вода «Хабаровская» и др.

Ход урока.

I. Мотивационно-целевая экспозиция.

T: Good morning, everybody. Glad to see you. Sit down, please. How are you? (P1, P2, P3: OK./ Fine, thanks./ Not too bad, thank you. )

What is the date today? (P: It’s the 14th of February today.)

Do you know what holiday do British and American children celebrate today? (P: As far as I know, they celebrate St. Valentine’s Day.)

Congratulate each other, say, “Happy Valentine’s Day”. OK. Let’s start our lesson. The theme of our lesson is “What do you think of popular things”. Try to guess what we are going to speak about. Begin with “Maybe/Probably we are going to speak about …”. (P: Maybe we are going to speak about people’s opinions about popular things? – T: Yes, you are absolutely right.)

Do you want to know their opinions? – Cl.: Yes, we do.

Look at the blackboard again, you can see two English proverbs here. Let’s read them.

(T – Cl., P1, P2.)

- Every bird likes its own nest best. (Всяк кулик своё болото хвалит.)

- There is no place like home. (Дома и солома едома.)

How do you understand them? What do they mean? (P: As far as I understand, they mean that every person likes his own place and everything in it best of all.)

Children, do you think that we can have the proverbs as our motto? (Cl.: Yes, we can.) So today we are going to speak about popular items in different countries.

II. Контрольно-оценочный этап.

1. T: I think it will be easier to talk if we remember opinion and fact adjectives we’ve learned recently.

Let’s make a Word Web. Try to name as many adjectives as you can. The student who says the last adjective in a group gets a counter.

2. In order to remember some popular items I suggest you to play a game “A Cat in a Sack”. Do you want to play? – Cl.: Yes, we do.

Take out a card, read and guess what popular item it is. (P1, P2, P3, P4, …)

Cards:

It is safe and peaceful. Life is everywhere.

It is a mysterious thing that attracts millions of people to Britain.

It’s traditional Russian food. A lot of people like to drink it especially when it is hot in summer.

These things are Russian national hand-made goods and they are bought by many tourists.

It is an international sport event that is held in Britain.

He is a successful Russian tennis player.

This place is enjoyed and admired by hundreds of people in Khabarovsk.

It’s pure, healthy and tasty. It is produced in Khabarovsk.

It’s a place in Britain where you can see wax life-size figures of famous people.

They are delicious to eat with tea or coffee. They are made in Khabarovsk.

Did you like the game? – Cl.: Yes, we did.

3. British people have 99 popular items in their list. Can you name any of them? Why are they popular?

4. Do you like your country, your region, your city? I’m sure you do. It’s high time to check up your home work. As far as I remember your task was to make a list of popular items in Russia and in the Far East in two groups. Are you ready? –Cl.:- Yes, we are.

Then, let’s imagine that it is summer now and you are spending your holidays in an international holiday centre. Your new British friends want to learn about the most popular items in your home places. What items would you tell them about?

The group of Russian students, you are welcomed.

P1: We’d like to tell you about popular items in Russia. Moscow is the capital of our country. The Russian State Library has mountains of books! It is packed with books about everything from dinosaurs to outer space. It has a copy of every book published in the country.

P2: The Bolshoi Theatre is the tops! It is one of the biggest theaters in the world. Moscow number one theatre of opera and ballet. Many outstanding singers and dancers perform on its stage.

P3: Moscow illumination is a marvelous sight! You’d be nuts to miss a chance to see it.

Russian countryside is safe and peaceful. There is life everywhere. It is visited and admired by many people.

P4: I’m mad about Babaevsky chocolate. It’s different from any other kind of chocolate. Babaevsky chocolate is the tops!

Russian traditional food is enjoyed by many people. It has fine taste and goodness. Nothing can beat Russian pelmeny, kulichy, okroshka, kvass, bubliky, bliny.you’d be nuts to miss achance to try them.

P5: Yevgeny Kafelnikov is a successful Russian tennis player. He is not like any other sportsman in the world. He is the golden medal champion of the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.i think y. Kafelnikov is No. 1 sportsman.

Students from the Far East, please.

P1: There are a lot of popular items in the Khabarovsk Territory. Let’s take the Amur Cliff, for example. It attracts many people. The Amur Cliff is popular because it is the place where people can have a rest and enjoy the Amur River. It is better compared to others.

The fountain in Lenin Square is admired and enjoyed by lots of tourists. It is popular because it is a marvelous sight! You’d be nuts to miss a chance to see the fountain!

P2: The circus is the tops! It is visited by hundreds of children and grown-ups. It’s a spectator place. You can see many interesting tricks there.

The new Cathedral in Sobornaya Square has a long history. It attracts a lot of tourists. The Cathedral is a marvelous sight!

P3: There are a lot of marvelous products in Khabarovsk. Let’s take Grig’s sausages, for example. They are popular in Khabarovsk because they are cheap to buy. Besides, they have nice taste and goodness.

Mineral water “Khabarovskaya” is one of a kind. It is pure, healthy and cheap to buy. Nothing can beat this mineral water.

P4: “Sputnik’s” sweets are delicious to eat with hot tea or coffee. They are enjoyed by lots of people. I’m mad about these sweets.

“Inary” diary products are one of a kind. You’d be nuts to miss a chance to try them. They have both taste and goodness.

P5: “Avest” TVsets, DVDs, washing machines are better compared to others! They are cheap to buy and easy to use.

T: And it’s interesting for me to know what brand good names your families buy and why. I for example, like to buy Pereyaslovka’s dairy products because they are healthy, tasty and quite cheap to buy. Besides, they have fine quality. (H/W AB p.99 ex. 10 )

Work in pairs, ask each other questions about the families’ favourite products.

Now let’s fill in our Top Five. What shall we put in?

T: So, I see that your families buy different things for different reasons. Let’s listen to some teenager’s opinions about popular things. Open your books at page 133, find ex. 1, please. We are going to listen to Linda’s and Paul’s opinions. Be ready to answer the question. What popular items are they discussing? Follow the tape, please.

Now look through the information again. In two minutes we’ll do a “True/False” exercise.
